and qualitative research regarding the impact of hurricane Katrina on the people and culture of New Orleans. In April 2008, 33 students and faculty members participated in V to the 10th, a celebration of the 10th anniversary of the Vagina Monologues: Until the Violence Stops. The author of the play Eve Ensler organized activists, advocates, artists and survivors of Katrina to reclaim the Superdome in New Orleans. The space was reclaimed with poetry, music, plays, workshops, alters, meditation tents, a march through the ninth ward etc. WGS students returned to EKU campus and engaged in a year-long awareness and fundraising project. They held concerts, coffee houses, and screenings of When the Levy's Broke, a film by Spike Lee. From April 9 thru the 13, 2009, 19 students and faculty returned to New Orleans to work with Hands On New Orleans a, volunteer organization. They participated in construction projects, care of the elderly, project green light etc. In addition, they investigated what was needed now by the people of New Orleans. They collected school supplies, children's pajamas, walmart gift cards, gently used clothing etc. They also designed surveys regarding the pre and post experience of Katrina survivors, the water quality, the crime rate, the impact on social services etc. Some are currently writing papers with their professors to submit for publication. EKU Women and Gender Studies Program and the Office of Multicultural Student Affairs is proud to have sponsored this year-long effort to engage students in community service and use their service experience to expand their cultural awareness and knowledge, while at the same time infusing this applied service-learning experience into their major and minor fields of study.
